The Evolution of Our Industry

Executive Protection (EP) has been around for thousands of years, spanning throughout the world. History has a multitude of examples of protection specialists from Samurais to medieval knights to the current United States Secret Service. Yet while our profession has been around for a long time, the age of modern private executive protection is still relatively young

During the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, several pioneers emerged in our field: Dr. Kobetz and EPI, Bob Duggan and ESI, and since then many others. These pioneers helped develop our profession in the private sector that I will call EP 1.0. During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s along came the advent of the internet and personal computers (PC) and the increase of security again changing our world and industry to advance and enter the 2.0 era. Now with the explosive expansion of the internet and social media, the greater use of protective intelligence, the changing role of close protection, and the ever increasing needs of people and companies requiring protection, we are now emerging into the EP 3.0 realm.

The founder of Henley-Putnam University stated that, “Executive protection is much more than just standing around, waiting and reacting; we must be prepared to meet any challenge long before ever being presented with it. Our responsibility, our obligation, our duty…is to prepare ourselves…for the future before it is presented to us as the challenges of the present.”

As Executive Protection professionals, it is incumbent of us to evolve with the evolving nature of our industry. Our 2015 conference will take the opportunity to explore what is expected of EP Professionals in the coming years. We will have several presentations and breakout discussions to examine these topics in great detail.

34th Annual NLA Conference

Since 1980, EPI continuously conducts and organizes an annual conference for the benefit of NLA Members. Dr. Kobetz created this annual conference because he knew that networking is the key to our success in this industry.

"Networking has been around for a long time, however, most of us still do not fully understand what it really is. Basically, it connects people with people. It is a valuable form of communication, and the key to success is making it work for you...Sending or handing out a business card, brochure, letter or any other paper or cardboard connection and waiting for the telephone to ring is not networking. People have to meet you, talk to you and get to know you in order to form opinions about you before they will reach a conclusion to work with you or offer you a job." Dr. Kobetz, (2003) Personal Protection Networking article.

For many years the conference was held as an annual alumni event until 2009 when the conference was opened to the public. This change opened up a larger business and social networking event for NLA members creating more business and job opportunities. 2012 began a new era of the co-sponsored ESI-EPI conferences, and the continuation of the NLA Annual conference.

Although there have been changes to the Annual Conference, we have still kept our NLA traditions of creating a special time to meet with just NLA Members and the continuation of the Black Tie Banquet, giving honor to our high stature in our industry. Every year the conference continues to grow by bringing in a remarkable line of speakers and more attendees every year. Also, the core of the conference has never changed; it has and will forever be to benefit NLA members. These benefits have only continued to increase every year.

You are the NLA and this is YOUR Conference! The value of the conference as an NLA member only comes from you attending the conference. As Dr. Kobetz has said, "You are the C.E.O. of your own network, and it is totally your responsibility. No one else can do it for you. Remember that networking never stops. Use every opportunity."

The Annual Conference was created to give you an opportunity to build relationships with other professionals in our industry.

Don't lose out on your opportunity to expand your network.

So, will we see you at this year's 34th Annual NLA Conference?
